Frequently asked questions

Which barcode should I use for products in a shop?

Use EAN-13 in India and most countries, or UPC-A in the USA and Canada. The number must be a registered one from GS1 if the product is sold through shops and marketplaces.

What is a check digit?

It is the last digit of EAN and UPC numbers, calculated from the others to catch typing mistakes. Type the number without it and this tool adds it. If you type the full number, it checks the digit is right.

What is the difference between Code 128 and Code 39?

Code 128 is denser and holds all letters, numbers and symbols. Code 39 is older and simpler, with capital letters and a few symbols. Choose Code 128 unless your system asks for Code 39.

How do I make a GS1-128 barcode?

Choose GS1-128 and type each Application Identifier in brackets, for example (01)12345678901231(10)AB123(17)261231. Always test the result with a scanner that supports GS1-128.

Can phones scan these?

Many scanning apps can read 1D barcodes. Camera apps usually read QR codes better. Use our QR generator if people will scan with a phone camera.

Does it make QR codes or 2D codes?

No, this tool makes the striped 1D barcodes. For QR codes, use qr.technoyes.com.
